Striking Silver
05/01/2006

Twin brothers, Tom and Jerry Caraccioli, present America's forgotten hockey team and the untold story of triumph by winning the silver medal in what could be considered the greatest upset in international hockey.
It was a captivating team comprised of players who were all shapes and sizes and from various walks of life that reflectd the fabric of American hockey. Even more fascinating is when you learn of the military background many of these players had before the games, including a few who wandered the jungles of Vietnam.
Just as interesting are the stories of the head coach, Murray Williamson. Murray was All-American in hockey at the University of Minnesota and former head coach of the U.S. National teams. Dedicated to hone his skills for the Olympic Winter Games, Murray traveled to Russia were he spent five days observing the Russian's coach training camp. Keying in on training techniques and conditioning methods, he returned home to develop a victorious blue print for the games in Japan.
It was a blind victory only seen by visiting spectators. The success of the 1972 Olympic hockey team was largely ingnored due to sparse television coverage and severe time zone differences. Only until the medal ceremony would the world have an opportunity to see silver placed proudly on the members of the American hockey team. But as the red carpet was rolled out, the red camera lights were turned off, the plugs pulled and the cameras put away. A blind trumphant victory... until now!
